The highest concentration of alcohol that can be obtained when alcohol is distilled from a water mixture is roughly 95%. If 100% alcohol is needed in laboratory work, as is sometimes the case in staining biological specimens or drawing the water out of specimens, another substance such as benzene may be used. Trace amounts of benzene remain in the alcohol, however, and benzene is toxic when ingested.
